Does Christian Growth Ever Want to Make You Scream?

I’ll go ahead and let the super spiritual people go ahead and talk about how easy the Christian life is and that they have never had any “growing pains” for Jesus. Now for the rest of us that are a little more honest, Christian Growth can be painful. Have you ever tried to do a strenuous workout? I know you won’t believe it, but I have. You always hear the statement “No pain, no gain”. The same applies in the Christian life.

I was reminded of this today when my wife and I were on the phone discussing some things. She drives me crazy when her faith is stronger than mine, but she said something that made me have to stop and talk to God about how much spiritual growth in a particular area hurts. This particular area happens to be finances. I know I have to stretch. I am totally understanding what Jesus was talking about when He said the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. The Spirit part of me wants to embrace the growth while the fleshly side of me is screaming. 😫

Many people never grow because they don’t want the pain that goes with it. They want an easy luxury liner to Heaven when living for Jesus is often like walking across a long bed of hot coals. Don’t be the one who plays it safe and lives with regret because you know you should have done more for Jesus. Be the one who has been through the fire and come out with your hands raised toward Heaven in praise and adoration for the One who used you to bring people to Him and take risks for the glory of God. It hurt when you took those early steps, but courage rose up within you. You may be screaming now, but that scream will turn into a shout of victory as you grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

  1. Amen. I’ve always longed for a simple, easy life. Lol I doubt any person on earth gets that. I finally waved my white flag to God. “Whatever happens God, thank you. I know it will end in goodness.”

  2. For sure, I would rather sit and watch movies and let the sovereign God grow me right? I love to hate any type of growth but I know its essential so I am thankful while being dragged lol.

Finances is a killer for me to! Thanks for sharing Matt!

  3. Love the pic you used for this! Haha! 😂
Great post and absolutely spot on. You can’t have a ministry without going through some mess! It’s how we grow in God and learn to trust and rely on Him for absolutely everything. It sure can be painful though.
Thanks for encouraging and sharing your heart.
    Hayley 😊

  4. I like that you used the word “stretch.” At the beginning of the school year in my bible school, our pastor gave us each a rubber band to always remind us that we are in a season of stretching haha. It’s a good visualization, really haha. And there is grace given for stretching, phew. Oh wow the christian life haha

  5. One thing I’ve always noticed is that God created a beautifully complexed brain that can think, analyze and motivate us to do better. He does not want us to be lazy, but our imperfect flesh wants us to take the easy road. Jesus said, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him disown himself and pick up his torture stake and keep following me.” (Matthew 16:24)
If we want to please God and move in step with his righteous organization than we have to grow along with the direction we receive and it won’t be easy or convenient. We have to sacrifice, even giving up things we love to “keep following”. It may seems arduous, but if we keep our eyes on the prize of life it will be well worth it in the end.
