Church Without Walls

I remember the first time I heard of a church named “The Church Without Walls”. I thought it was odd. My young, not-so-biblically-literate mind was thinking about a building. I did not grasp the concept that the church is not a building or organization but rather people who have trusted Christ across denominations. As Overcomers is a body of believers that is a little over a year old, we do not have a permanent building. We don’t have traditions. Honestly, it is extremely refreshing.

While many “churches” (as in the organizations) were meeting in ornate buildings, some like us were meeting outside. We celebrate the risen Savior every Sunday. It just happened to be that on Easter Sunday, that worship took place under a park shelter. God sent a nice breeze our way, and some of the campers could hear us. We ate lunch there and stayed until we had to leave. It was wonderful.

We all must grasp the concept that the true church (those who are born again) are not trapped within walls. We are not bound but are free to serve the Lord and reach far and wide with the message that Jesus can forgive and change lives.

Here are some pictures as we worshiped our Lord and Savior without walls.

      1. A friend of ours started a church near a garbage dump in Africa, people lived in the garbage dump. Now they have a facility for the kids and the people are feeling worthy of being loved. The church started right outside their makeshift homes and now they have a building. God truly meets us where we are.

      2. Absolutely! I would appreciate your prayers as we are in limbo about where our church will meet. The facility we currently rent may no longer be available. Iโ€™m looking for quick direction because Sunday is a mystery right now. God came through before, and He will again.

  1. Great news to know that we are the church and because of this we can reach far and wide! Thanks for sharing Matthew.

    Traditions can be very helpful.

  2. Amen! I love this! I go to an extremely large church but our church focuses on cell groups held weekly in homes, and it is where REAL church happens. Connection, fellowship, eating together, discussing Godโ€™s word and outreach is essential to growing in Christ! Church has nothing to do with a building!

  3. Wonderful! No where have I read that to worship ‘in spirit and in truth’ has to be inside and ‘official’ building! We are currently ministering in/out of our home, with no plans of taking on a separate building to do the things God is having us do.
Blessings to you and your ministry,
    Chuck

  4. I loved this post! A lot of people classify the church to just meaning “inside four walls,” but the church is so much more than a building. The church is a body of believers who represent Christ and the gospel. I wish that many more would realize this as well, for Jesus said when two or more are gathered in His name, He is in the midst of them. It doesn’t have to be an “official church building,” but it can be anywhere! Christ doesn’t limit Himself to one place, but He is everywhere where He is welcomed!

    God bless you! ๐Ÿ™‚
